Earlier this week, former Pakistan pacemaker Mohammad Amir sparked controversy by comparing Babar Azam’s wicket to that of a tailender before the game between Karachi Kings and Peshawar Zalmi in PSL 2023.
Babar Azam joined Peshawar ahead of PSL 2023 after leading Karachi Kings in PSL 2022. Karachi lost nine straight games in PSL 2022 under Babar’a’s captaincy. Meanwhile, Amir, just before the Peshawar vs. Karachi clash in the PSL, said that bowling at Babar for him is similar to bowling at a tailender for him.

Amir and Babar were teammates at Karachi Kings in PSL 2022. Babar was the team leader and Amir was one of their best wicket takers with the ball. 12 months later, Babar is now a part of Peshawar Zalmi and he is also the leader of the team. Ahead of the clash between the two sides, Mohammed Amir has downplayed his matchup against Babar Azam. In an interaction with ARY’s PSL Special news programme, the former Pakistan pacemaker said it’s matchups like this that make matches interesting.

“Did he say that because of Babar? That is surprising. If you go anywhere in the world and say Babar is playing for us, they’ll say ‘Oh Babar! (He is a) King”, Afridi told Pakistani news channel Geo News.
“This shouldn’t happen. Babar is our number 1 player and we respect him. If we as Pakistanis don’t respect it, who else will?” Afridi further stated.
Meanwhile, Peshawar won the game against Karachi by just two runs with Babar Azam scoring 68 from 46 balls. England all-rounder Tom-Cohler Cadmore scored 92 off 50 balls after the fine start provided by Babar which took his side to 199/5 from their 20 overs.
Karachi Kings took the game all the way with Karachi captain Imad Wasim scoring 80 from 47 balls along with Shoaib Malik’s 53 after the poor start to the early games. Mohammad Amir had a poor start with the ball on 42 runs in his wicketless spell. In the end, Karachi fell just two runs short and finished on 195/5.
