NZ vs SL: “Bit Of An Afterthought”: Kane Williamson On His Last-Ditch Dive To Take New Zealand To A Win In 1st Test

Kane Williamson scored an unbeaten 121 as New Zealand won the first Test with the final ball of the match against Sri Lanka in dramatic circumstances. Kiwi’s victory secured India’s safe passage to the 2023 WTC final when they drew the fourth and final Test against Australia.

Sri Lanka one percentage point lower than India needed to win the Test series 2-0 to qualify for the end of the world trade center. It turned out, however, that the Lankans came second in a fascinating contest and a Kiwi win saw India reach back-to-back World Test Championship finals.

Williamson spoke to reporters after leading New Zealand to a first Test victory about what made him pull out the last-minute jumper to make the crease in Christchurch and what exactly was going through his mind at the time.

“I didn’t look too agile there. And to be honest, it was a bit of an afterthought because I knew the pitch would go to the end of Neil (Wagner) and I thought going towards the crease maybe I should throw a little jumper for good measure and I was nice. to be in a position to do so” Williamson said.

“But you know an amazing game of cricket to be a part of and both teams competed against each other over the five days and all the results were on the table before we went into Day 5.” further added.

It was the second time in two weeks that New Zealand had been part of a dramatic Test match. They won the second Test against England by one run from an apparently lost position. Sri Lanka also had their moments in the first Test but the Kiwis held their nerve and with Williamson at one end they went on to victory.

Neil Wagner deserves a special mention as well, as he came out to bat despite having physical issues and got through that single and was on time. He came out to bat despite a torn hamstring and a bulging disc in his back with the game on the line Monday.

“That is special for Test cricket. It’s great that we have a couple of those experiences and I hope you know that a lot of people are enjoying it. For us, as players, it has been special to participate in games of this type or in any Test Match. But obviously, over the five days, you know the competition is fierce and it could have gone either way and the result was at the best of margins.” Williamson concluded by saying.

The second NZ vs SL Test match kicks off on March 17 in Wellington.
