Ravi Shastri, former head coach of the Indian cricket team, expressed his admiration for James Anderson’s incredible feat of becoming the world No. 1 Test bowler at the age of 40.

Shastri considers Anderson to be one of the best fast pitchers to ever play the game. Speaking to The ICC Review, he praised Anderson’s work ethic and the effort he has put in to stay at the top of his game.

Shastri also highlighted James Anderson’s ability to train at 100% intensity, which has allowed him to continue to perform at the highest level even at this stage of his international career.

Ravi Shastri praises James Anderson’s hunger for success

With 682 Test wickets to his name, James Anderson has benefited from his longevity in the game, with only Muttiah Muralitharan (800) and Shane Warne (708) ahead of him on the all-time list of wicket-takers for proof.

Amongst Anderson’s Test wickets, 429 have been taken on his home soil, making him the best in the world in English conditions according to Shastri.

“I used to watch him very closely when he was coaching on tours of England every time. And what he used to admire was his work ethic. Even in the Indian conditions, there were times when he did not play in India. But he would go out bowling during lunch or right after the day’s play or before the day’s play.”

“I would say I would throw 20 balls or 25 balls max. But on every ball, he would give it his all. And sometimes he would say to my fast bowlers, ‘Just look at that. Just look at the professionalism, the work ethic.’”

James Anderson will be in action in the second Test match against New Zealand, as England will look to end their tour of the nation with a clean sweep over their opponents in the red ball format.
