Lucknow Super Giants captain Krunal Pandya lamented poor shot selection after his team suffered an 81-run crushing defeat against Mumbai Indians to retire from IPL 2023.

The Mumbai Indians scored 182 for 8 in the allotted 20 overs after their captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and chose to bat first. The 5-time IPL champions got off to a poor start as their two openers started within 5 overs with just 38 runs on the board. Cameron Green and Suryakumar Yadav then steadied the ship and took the score past the 100-run mark before Naveen-ul-Haq dismissed them both in quick succession. Helpful cameos from Tilak Varma and Nehal Wadhera guided the team to a total of over 180.

In response, Lucknow Super Giants came out with a disastrous batting display and was all set for a paltry 101 inside 17 overs. The Krunal Pandya-led side never really seemed in contention to chase the total as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Other than Marcus Stoinis, who scored 40, no other Lucknow batsman managed to put up any significant resistance with the bat.

“We were in a good position at one stage but it all started (going wrong) when I played that shot, we should have played better cricket. That shot (his wicket) was not on, I take full blame for that.

“The ball was hitting the bat very well, we just had to hit better. We didn’t play cricket well after that strategic break. Quinton de Kock is a quality hitter, but Mayers has a better record here, so we got ahead (in the playing XI) with him. His hitters hit very well against fast pitchers so I thought I would start spin against them,” Krunal Pandya said after the game.
