Shane Watson played the last three years of his IPL career for Chennai super kings alongside MS Dhoni. He played for the team between 2018 and 2020, scoring over 1,200 runs for the team and playing a major role in helping CSK win the 2018 IPL title.
CSK returned to the IPL in 2018 after being banned for two years on match-fixing charges. Watson was one of the new CSK recruits that was called “Daddy’s Army” in his comeback season. This was because most of the team’s players were over the age of 30, MS Dhoni himself was 35 at the time.

MS Dhoni got emotional at the team’s first role: Shane Watson
In a pre-match interview in Doha, the duo spoke about their time at CSK and claimed victory in 2018. Watson recalled the moment MS Dhoni got emotional when the whole team got together for the first time.
“There was a moment when MS Dhoni got up and spoke at the first team function we had. You could see how much it meant to him, he was moved by how much it meant to him for CSK to get back together.” Watson said.

We go out and have fun: Shane Watson on CSK culture
Watson further spoke about CSK’s victory over arch-rivals Mumbai Indians in the season opener courtesy of Dwayne Bravo’s feats with the bat. That victory reignited the spark of the CSK-MI rivalry in the IPL.
“Then in the first game against MI, Dwayne Bravo pulled the rabbit out of the hat and brought us home out of nowhere. The belief of the immediate. We have the team, we have the players and we had good performances. The atmosphere that Dhoni and Stephen Fleming created… you just went out and had fun. We never talked about results, (we were) there just to have fun. We had a great group of players, with families there as well. For me, it was a special moment.” recalled the former versatile Australian.
CSK plays the first match of IPL 2023 against Gujarat Titans on March 31 to kick off the season. The Titans are the defending champions of the title.
