IND vs AUS: “We Needed To Give Him That Break” – Paras Mhambrey Justifies Team’s Decision To Rest Mohammed Shami For The Indore Test

Muhammad shami He struggled to get off to a good start in Ahmedabad on Wednesday after missing the latest test in Indore due to the Indian team’s rotation policy. The first delivery from him was well off the mark and he was caught in the slips by Virat Kohli. The fifth ball was even worse; he went so wild that he slid down the ropes and hit the slips.

There were concerns that India would waste the new ball on a slow surface in the heat. Sunil Gavaskar stated on the radio that India should not have rested Mohammed Shami for the third Test in Indore. He believed that because there was an 8-day break before the last test, Shami would have recovered enough and also kept up with him.

Mohammed Shami’s workload is managed because he has played a lot: Paras Mhambrey

Mohammed Shami would improve during the day. He bowled 17 overs and was the most successful bowler in a couple of excellent spells. Even in a friendly, he got Labuschagne and then Handscomb to finish with 2/65 numbers. However, there were times when he seemed rusty and out of sync as he did in the first two tests of the series.

So, did the team management make a mistake by resting the fit and packed Mohammed Shami? This is a problem that team think tanks face in times of demanding schedules and task management. At the end of Day 1 of the Border-Gavaskar series, India bowling coach Paras Mhambrey discussed the team’s thought processes in urging India’s fast bowler to relax in the latest Test.

“We look at the workload of the individual bowlers and the way we look at Shami has played a lot. We needed to give him that break. For us, that’s also an opportunity for someone like Siraj or Umesh to get a game. After this series we have the world trials championship. We have to look at that too.

So going forward, I see that everyone has a chance, as that is also important. At this level I don’t see it as a problem, sometimes you have to rotate the players and it’s important for the player as well”. he said.

However, Mohammed Shami reiterated his desire to continue playing. He claimed that no bowler enjoys sitting if he is in good shape.

“Who has the courage, what bowler or batsman has the himmat to say he wants to sit down? Nobody wants to sit. Of course, there is something called workload management. I agree with that to a certain extent, but sometimes I think it has some downsides as well. I feel that in the moments when you are in good shape and with great pace, you should not stop playing. Of course, sometimes I feel that, for the sake of recovery, I need to take a break. You have to do it smartly.”

Another factor may have forced Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma to divert their attention from their best bowler. By the way, the choice of Mohammed Shami was made by the team’s management a few days after it became known that Jasprit Bumarh needed surgery for a lower back ailment. With Mohammed Shami taking over as the team’s speed leader in all its guises, it made sense to put a cloth on him.

With the IPL almost two months long, followed by the WTC final and the 50th World Cup later in the year, India must use its pacing resources wisely.
