The team’s management only had 13 players to choose from: Sunil Gavaskar

Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar questioned the intentions of the selectors and how three unfit players were included in the squad for the first two Tests, saying that the team management only had 13 players to pick for the series opener.

“While ex-Australian players on the various media platforms are getting a real chance with their players, the real targets should be the Australian selectors. How can they pick three players (Hazlewood, Starc and Cameron Green) who they knew wouldn’t be available for selection in the first two Test matches? That is, during the middle of the series, the team management only had 13 players to choose from.

“Then they sign a newcomer (Matthew Kuhnemann) when they already had a similar player on the team. If they didn’t think the player on the team was good enough, why did they pick him in the first place? That meant the team’s management was picking their 11 out of 12 players. Ridiculous. If they have any sense of responsibility, the selectors should step down even if Australia make an impressive comeback and win the next two Tests and level the series.” Gavaskar wrote in his column for Sportstar.

Meanwhile, Australia won the third Test to keep their BGT series hopes alive, and qualified for the World Test Championship (WTC) final for the first time, which is scheduled to be played at the Oval in June this year.
