He also cautions that constant sweeping can be risky, as a skilled spin bowler can exploit the weaknesses of this approach by causing the ball to bounce unpredictably.
Ian Chappell not happy with Australia’s constant sweep
The former Australian captain was not happy with the way his team had approached the Indian spinners as he spoke about the players’ approach and that they needed to trust their own game rather than play an aggressive style of cricket.

“You don’t figure out how to play good spin bowling later in life on a slaughtered Australian course just before a major tour of India. The most beneficial are to be aware of the ball, more than in Australia, and that there is a fraction more time than you think.
“You have to learn good footwork, take three steps out of your crease or retreat quickly to your back foot, at a young age. It should have been obvious in the build-up to Australia what kind of batting strategies needed to be used in India.”
Australia’s strategy of relying on the sweep shot to counter Indian spins did not work well as they lost the first two Tests and India retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The series has two more games to go and it will be interesting to see what approach Australia decides to take in the final two games.
