Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the ODI series against Australia due to a recurrence of his lower back injury. Iyer did not bat in the second innings of the fourth test against the Australians. Skipper Rohit Sharma will not be available for the first ODI as Hardik Pandya will lead the team in his absence.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Team India’s field manager T Dilip confirmed Shreyas Iyer’s absence from the series. Iyer missed the first Test due to his back injury, played the second and third, and has now aggravated his injury again.

Injuries are an integral part of the game: T Dilip on Shreyas Iyer

“Injuries are an integral part of the game. We have the best medical facilities and they are well equipped… We are in coordination (with NCA). Shreyas ruled out of this series. (We will be able to provide) more updates when we know. India’s field coach Dilip told reporters at his debut press conference.

The Indian think tank is yet to name Shreyas Iyer’s replacement for the ODI series against Australia. There, BCCI has many options including Sanju Samson, Deepak Hooda, Krunal Pandya, Rahul Tewatia and Rahul Tripathi to name a few.

Iyer’s lower back problems resurfaced in the fourth Test and the star batsman did not come out to bat for the hosts in the first innings against Australia. Iyer was later ruled out of the fifth Test on the final day of the series decider due to lower back pain.
