Former Australian opener Matthew hayden criticized the decision to leave Travis Head out of the first Test against India in Nagpur, which the hosts won by one innings and 132 runs.

Travis Head delivered one of the decisive blows of his career, withstanding sustained pressure from India’s spinners on a roaring turner in Indore before finding his feet to hit a 53-ball 49 to lead Australia to a rare triumph in India.

Many were surprised when Australia dropped Head in the first Test after a stellar domestic summer in which he scored four fifty-one centuries against the West Indies and South Africa. This move seemed to be motivated by India’s plan to go after lefties.

Former Australian starter Matthew Hayden, who is part of Star Sports’ coverage for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, claims that Australia should have started Travis Head in the first test as he was the better player.

And Matthew Hayden has been vocal in his disapproval of that choice after his winning entries in Indore.“Australia just didn’t play their best side (in the first Test). Travis Head should have been picked No. 1 for that side.” he was quoted as saying by foxsports.com.au.

“Travis head it’s showing exactly why you chose it”: Matthew Hayden

Matthew Hayden believes that while Head’s record on the subcontinent, and particularly in India, was not great, his aggressive batting style, propensity to score quickly and great form should have made him a selection for any Test team. a no brainer

“He was brilliant last (Australian) summer. Who cares what happens a few years ago, I was fit! Required to play that (first) Test. And now it shows exactly why you chose it.” said Matthew Hayden.

“He has a wonderful scoring intention, his hit rate is huge. She gets that drive and that belief in the batting locker room. It’s a mover and shaker.” added Matthew Hayden.

With their victory in Indore, Australia also secured a place in the World Test Championship final, which will take place in England in June.
