IND vs AUS: “His Method Has Proved It’s Worked In Difficult Conditions”- Steve Smith Stunned By Matthew Hayden’s “Un-Australian” Remark On Peter Handscomb

In the third Test against India in Indore, Australia under the leadership of Steve Smith stunned the home team by 9 wickets. The alternate captain received a ton of applause for taking advantage of technical glitches and surprising the hosts. However, after due process, other Australian batsmen were also called up to bat against India with a lack of purpose.

Matthew Hayden, a former Australian batsman who is currently doing commentary for this series, did not seem enthusiastic about Peter Handscomb’s performance on the second day of the Indore Test. Before the Australians lost 6 wickets for 11 runs, the latter produced a brave 19 from 98 deliveries. Hayden, however, lacked a sense of admiration.

Steve Smith disappointed by Matthew Hayden’s comments about Peter Handscomb

“(Handscomb’s) hit rate of less than 20 means he’s going nowhere, and the scoring isn’t going anywhere,” Hayden said in the comment.

“It’s hardly Australian. He just isn’t attacking enough. added.

The interim captain stated that hearing such comments astonished him because Handscomb has been one of the team’s leading scorers and has been “excellent” with the bat throughout the series.

“I think he has been outstanding in the first two tests. A 70-something, in the first turns, in both, and it left him quite stranded. If one of the other top seven, I guess, could partner with him, things could certainly be different.” Steve Smith told reporters on the eve of the Ahmedabad test.

Steve Smith backed up his teammate and praised the Indore Test player’s skills. He claimed that Handscomb trusted his defense and that his approach allowed him to score runs in difficult circumstances.

“I was quite disappointed to see some of the feedback from the last Test match about him not playing the Australian way. He hit the same in the first innings and throughout the series. He hit beautifully in the first two, stuck to his method, trusted his defense, and then knocked down balls that were over-thrown or too short and played them with his back foot.” Steve Smith said.

“His method has been shown to work in difficult conditions.

“So, I was surprised to see some feedback about the way he was playing because I think he and Uzzy (Khawaja) have probably been possibly our two best hitters in this series.” added.
