Steve Smith gave a glimpse of his savvy captaincy as he led Australia to victory in the third Test at Indore. Smith was named team captain in the absence of Pat Cummins, who decided to stay home due to the illness of his mother, who later passed away.
The last two Test matches gave Smith the opportunity to demonstrate his knowledge of the game as Test captain. It was his great knowledge of the game and his ability to understand the game that led Australia to a Test victory in Indore and helped them return to the series.

Ravichandran Ashwin who has had many clashes with Steve Smith, praised the latter for his clever captaincy in the last two events. Ashwin, who is a great reader of the game, praised Smith for the way he led Australia in the last two tests and especially in Indore.

We are aware of the fact that he is a heavy hitter, but to be a great student of the game, you have to know all the nuances. “He gets the game. He knows when to do what and he gets the hang of the game ” Ashwin said of Smith’s captaincy.

Never let us take control in Indore test: Ravichandran Ashwin over Steve Smith
The Indian spinner especially praised Smith for the way he led India in the Indore test match and did not let India into the game. He also made good use of Nathan Lyon who finished with 11 wickets in the match.
“He led them very well in the last two Tests, whether it was field placement or bowling changes, he was spot on. He never let us take control in the Indore Test.” Smith said.
This was a series where the likes of Ravichandran Ashwin and Nathan Lyon showed their class on the ball. Lyon and Ashwin hit many benchmarks in the series. He spent 100 wickets against India in test matches and reached 50 wickets against India in India.
Courtesy of his six-fer in the early innings of the fourth Test, Ashwin finished the series with 25 wickets, followed by Lyon and Ravindra Jadeja with 22 each.
