Things have not worked out for Royal Challengers Bangalore Women in the ongoing season of the Women’s First Division 2023 as the team led by Smriti Mandhana suffered their third consecutive loss in the tournament after losing to Gujarat Giants.
Gujarat Giants secured their first win of the 2023 Women’s Premier League (WPL) season by defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore Women by 11 runs in the sixth match of the tournament, which witnessed an impressive performance from the batsmen. Sophia Dunkley and Harleen Deol stole the limelight for Gujarat with their exceptional batting, scoring 65 and 67 runs respectively.

Dunkley’s remarkable punch was even more remarkable when he posted the fastest fifty in WPL history, taking just 18 deliveries to go to reach the milestone. Heather Knight and Shreyanka Patil were the main wicket-takers for Royal Challengers, taking two wickets each.
Despite losing their captain early in the innings, Smriti Mandhana and her team made a fine start to the chase, hitting 80 runs in the first 10 overs. However, Gujarat Giants managed to restrain Bangalore’s drive, preventing them from taking control of the game.
Although Heather Knight played a quick tackle to try and turn the game in Bangalore’s favour, it was ultimately insufficient to secure victory.

WPL 2023: Smriti Mandhana still hopes that the team can get positive results
Smriti Mandhana spoke about the bitter loss against Gujarat Giants during the post-match introduction and felt that his team gave up some extra runs which hurt them in the end. The Bangalore captain praised her players for their performance, but she hopes the team can get some positive results.
“Well, I think we gave 10-15 extra runs. The girls batted well, but there were a couple of overs where we got just three or four runs. We might have scored seven or eight runs. He is a good wicket and a good outfield. One end is short and that played into the minds of some of our bowlers. The way Shreyanka pitched and hit is certainly positive. Kanika also showed great focus and these are the positives that we will take from this one,” he said.
Smriti Mandhana’s Bangalore have now lost all three games they have played and will be desperate to win a match as a couple more losses could affect their chances of reaching the knockout stages of the tournament.
