Bruised Gujarat Giants seek immediate turnaround against UP Warriorz

UP Warriorz vs. the Gujarat Giants

Gujarat Giants will return to DY Patil Stadium one day after their heavy defeat at the hands of Mumbai Indians, hoping for a turnaround when they take on UP Warriorz, who are playing their first ever Women’s Premier League game. But unfortunately for the Giants, the problems extend beyond the field.

Giants replaced Deandra Dottin of the West Indies with Kim Garth of Australia in the days leading up to the WPL. The team said Dottin was “recovering from a medical situation” but took to social media to suggest she is doing well. Then, in the first over of their 208 chase against the Mumbai Indians, Giants captain Beth Mooney suffered a knee injury as she ran between the wickets and was helped off the pitch.

players to watch

For the Warriorz, Healy, Navgire and Harris are expected to provide the fireworks with the bat, with support from Tahlia McGrath, Deepti and Devika Vaidya. They also have Shweta Sehrawat, who was part of India’s U-19 World Cup winning team.

In the bowling department, Ismail, Lauren Bell and Anjali Sarvani are the pace options, while Sophie Ecclestone and Rajeshwari Gayakwad shore up the spinning department above all-rounders.

For the Giants, 25-year-old left-arm spinner Tanuja Kanwar was among the few bright spots against the Mumbai Indians, conceding just 12 runs from her two overs.
Dayalan Hemalatha was another, with an unbeaten 29 of 23 deliveries that included two sixes and one four. With Mooney’s availability uncertain, he will have more responsibility to bolster his hitting.
Ashleigh Gardner, the player of the tournament at the recent T20 Women’s World Cup, picked a wicket but went for 38 and was ruled out for a golden duck against Mumbai, but she will be in the spotlight.
