Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar was not impressed with Delhi Capitals (DC) not properly using Axar Patel with the bat on the field. Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. He said there was stubbornness in the team not to promote the lefty up the order.

Delhi Capitals had the worst possible season in IPL 2023. They were the first team to be knocked out of the tournament as they failed to get going in all three departments. Other than that, it’s fair to say that some mismanagement was also in the offering, which saw them fall apart.

Even though they had a poor season, all-rounder Axar Patel was the shining light for them in the big tunnel. The left-hander was arguably the best hitter for them this season and seemed the most established hitter on his team, making vital contributions in almost every game.

Axar Patel single-handedly got DC out of trouble in many games and played some magnificent shots that helped them win a few games as well. But despite being fit, he was not used well by the team’s management as he hit under 6 for most of the season.

Sunil Gavaskar said that Delhi Capitals were stubborn in not promoting Axar Patel in their batting order even though he was in good shape. He also highlighted how the mismanagement even made Ravi Shastri question whether the all-rounder had signed a contract with a team that would not bat above number 7. Writing in his column for Sportstar, he said:

“There was the stubborn, almost defiant refusal to promote the in-form Axar Patel up the batting order. This led Ravi Shastri, who had coached the Indian team until last year and saw Axar’s batting ability, to question whether there was anything in the contract that said Patel would not hit higher than number 7 in the batting order. ”.

Axar Patel contributed equally well with bat and ball in IPL 2023. He scored 282 runs and picked up 11 wickets for DC in IPL 2023.

IPL 2023: “Prithvi Shaw has also been unable to reach an agreement,” says Sunil Gavaskar.

Prithvi Shaw was the biggest disappointment for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2023. The batsman struggled to score runs and was also dropped from the squad after poor performances. He scored just 106 runs in 8 games.

Sunil Gavaskar also pointed out Prithvi Shaw’s poor form, noting how he was concerned about the balls around his ribcage. He explained:

“Prithvi Shaw has also been unable to accept delivery around the ribcage, and the result has been a dearth of runs from some of the country’s most promising and prolific young players.”

Delhi Capitals finished the season 9th on the points table with 5 wins from their 14 games.
