On Sunday June 4, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced that Jack Leach, the 31-year-old left-arm spinner for the England National Cricket Team, has been ruled out of the Ashes 2023 series due to a lumbar stress fracture.

Slow left-arm orthodox pitcher Jack Leach has represented the England cricket team in 35 Test matches and has bagged 124 wickets at an average of 34.18 and an economy of 3.03, his best bowling figures in a match being 10/166.

Expected to play a key role for the Three Lions in the upcoming Ashes series, Jack Leach recently appeared in the one-off Test match against the Ireland national cricket team at Lord’s Cricket Ground. Jack Leach returned with figures of 3/35 and 1/90 in the match as the Ben Stokes-led team thrashed Ireland for 10 wickets in three days.

Jack Leach developed lower back symptoms during England’s win over Ireland: ECB

In an official statement issued by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), it was claimed that the Somerset spinner “developed lower back symptoms” during the match against Ireland.

It was further mentioned that Jack Leach underwent a scan on Sunday in London and the spinner was found to have a lumbar stress fracture, which will keep him out of the entire Ashes series. The ECB has yet to name any replacement for the senior spinner.

“England Men’s spinner Jack Leach has been ruled out of the LV= Insurance Men’s Ashes series with a lower back (lumbar) stress fracture, the ECB said in an official press release.

“The 31-year-old Somerset, slow in his left arm, developed lower back symptoms during England’s LV=Test of Insurance victory over Ireland on Saturday.

“A scan on Sunday in London revealed a stress fracture, which will keep him out of the upcoming Ashes Test series, which begins in Edgbaston on Friday June 16. England will announce a replacement for the Ashes series in due course.”

The 2023 Marquee Ashes series will kick off on June 16 in Birmingham. The remaining four games in the series are scheduled to be played at Lord’s, Leeds, Manchester and The Oval.
